
Melissa thought she found an ally with credit cards. So she swiped and swiped, thinking that she could handle its gradual pay. She uses it anywhere, almost impossible to get it out of her sight or even out of her purse. She sincerely enjoyed the carefree splurges. The first bill came and she sighed off with relief. Her monthly pay could cover the dues and the interest rates. So she went on. Little by little, Melissa's running out of cash. Before she realizes it, she's using the card even in minor purchases. 'Til the next bills came and this time she blared in horror. It didn't stop from there. She was constanttly receiving calls from the debt collectors, feeling harassed everyday until her card was finally cancelled.
Melissa declared bankruptcy. But her itch still controls her urges. She moved back to her mom's house but was tempted to steal as soon as she saw her mom's card. She used it constantly. It was never to be put out of her sight. She can no longer use her wad of cash. Like an addictive substance, it creeps up to her system, dictating every move. Melissa's life was a mess.
She consulted for a psychiatric treatment. She rebuffs the idea at first not willing to accept
her pitiful situation. It took her 6 months to finally gain control, but her regular
psychiatric session continues.
Now, Melissa is still living with her mother. She recently got hired but vowed never to touch another credit card again. She saves money on her piggy bank. Since her unusual episodes of addiction, she tried not to deal with banks anymore. She confesses that it's easy to be abusive when you know you have something that you can push to the edge. So for her credit card is not an option anymore!
